A Monthly Practice for Purification & Presence

Life moves fast. We are constantly pulled in different directions, leaving us feeling depleted, reactive, and "holding back" in our own lives. Our minds are filled with "mental noise," and it's easy to feel disconnected from ourselves.

What if you could set aside 90 minutes each month to consciously "strip away distraction, hesitation, and doubt"?

This is the purpose of our Monthly Misogi Refresh. Misogi (禊), at its core, is about purification and presence. This class is not a lecture, but a guided experience that uses traditional Japanese practices to clear away mental clutter and revitalize your energy. It is an opportunity to "wash away yesterday's burdens and start fresh."

No experience is necessary. All are welcome.

Bring a Newfound Clarity into Your Life

The principles you practice in the dojo are practical tools for a better life. This monthly "refresh" is designed to create tangible, positive changes in how you approach your everyday challenges.

Revitalize Your Energy

Learn to use your breath to release deep-seated tension, leaving you feeling invigorated and renewed.

Enhance Mental Clarity

"Eliminate all unnecessary thoughts" and develop the laser-like focus to make decisions with confidence.

Act with Initiative

Move from a state of "holding back" to one of "Sossen Kyuko" (Taking the Initiative), allowing you to act decisively in your work and life.

Build Stress Resilience

Develop a "pure, unshakable presence" that helps you remain calm and centered during stressful situations, responding rather than reacting.

Improve Your Presence

Cultivate a calm, centered, and positive energy that others notice in your conversations and daily interactions.

Breathe New Life Into Your Routine

Break the monotony and start each month with a clear mind, full commitment, and a fresh perspective.

Who Is This For?

This practice is designed for anyone seeking a deeper connection to themselves and a more centered way of living. While our students come from all walks of life, they share a common desire for personal growth.

The Busy Professional

You're looking for a practical way to decompress from constant demands. This class is a powerful tool to clear your mind, "wash away" work stress, and make clear, confident decisions.

The Parent or Caregiver

You feel depleted from putting everyone else's needs first. This is 90 minutes just for you, to recharge your battery, cultivate patience, and find the calm energy you want to bring home to your family.

The "Meditation App" User

You're interested in mindfulness but find it hard to practice alone, or you're looking for something "deeper." This guided, active practice is a powerful, multi-sensory experience that is far more engaging than a simple app.

The Seeker & Personal Growth Explorer

You are drawn to practices that develop both mind and spirit. This is a unique opportunity to experience an authentic, traditional Japanese practice that forges your spirit and "leaves no room for doubt."

If any of these sound like you, you've found the right place.

The Three Pillars of the Misogi Refresh

This guided class is a complete practice to harmonize your breath, body, and mind.

1. Ki Breathing

We begin with Ki Breathing and other exercises to calm the nervous system, settle the mind, and connect with our natural center (the "One Point").

2. Sokushin-no-gyo (Purification Through Breath)

This is the core of the practice. Using the clear, ringing sound of a bell, we perform continuous breathing and clear vocalization ("kiai"). This is not a "machismo" endurance test, but a powerful method to "eliminate all unnecessary thoughts," be fully present in the moment, and forge a state of "absolute presence." No singing skill is required—the focus is on the vibration and the breath.

3. Ki Meditation

After the active purification, we sit in quiet Ki Meditation. This allows the mind and body to absorb the practice, settling into the calm, clear, and revitalized state you have just cultivated.

"In my 25 years of training, I've found these Misogi practices to be some of the most transformative. As I wrote in my article on the subject, we often find that the 'machismo of enduring pain' becomes an obstacle.

Our practice is different.

What truly matters is 'learning to be fully 100% present in each moment.' My goal is to guide you through this powerful experience in a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment. This isn't an endurance test; it's a practice for everyone to find their own 'unshakable presence.' I look forward to practicing with you."

Your Questions Answered

Do I need any prior experience?

None at all. This class is designed from the ground up to be accessible to everyone, regardless of background, fitness level, or experience. You'll be guided through every step.

What should I wear?

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing you can move and sit in. Sweatpants and a t-shirt are perfect. We practice barefoot on the mats.

Do I need to be a Ki-Aikido student?

No. This class is open to our entire community. While it perfectly complements Ki-Aikido training, it is a standalone practice that offers immense benefits to anyone.

I'm not flexible / I can't sit on the floor for long.

That is perfectly fine. We have chairs and seiza benches available. The goal is a calm, stable mind, not a specific posture. We focus on comfort and safety.

Is the "vocalization" part intimidating?

Not at all. It's not about singing, and you are not performing. It is a simple, clear sound (like "toh" or "ka") practiced together as a group. The collective sound and vibration are a powerful way to focus the mind and release stress.
